2-Day Guide to Preparing for a Carpet Cleaning Service

Getting your carpets cleaned is an easy and fairly quick process. Nevertheless, you can take some steps beforehand to ensure that a carpet cleaning goes smoothly and the results last for a long time. If you're having your home's carpeting cleaned soon, here's how to prepare for the service.

Day Before: Dust Around the Carpet

Sometime the day before your carpet cleaning, take time to dust the hard surfaces near your carpets. These surfaces include baseboards, furniture legs, and heating vents.

Dusting around your carpets won't make the cleaning itself more effective, but it will keep dust from getting onto your carpets soon after they're cleaned. Should you skip this step, your carpets will look a little dingy around the edges, where baseboards, furniture, and vents are.

If you don't have time to dust the day before and have children, this is an excellent chore for them to do. It doesn't require getting up high, handling breakable items, or using harmful chemicals, and your children can complete it quickly.

Day or Evening Before: Move Items and Vacuum the Carpets

You should also set aside time to move furniture, either the day or evening before. Some homeowners leave this until the evening so they can use their furniture throughout the day.

The carpet cleaning service you hire will move large and heavy pieces of furniture for you, but the company may not carry liability insurance that covers handling breakable items. You'll likely have to move any electronics, antique lamps, glass vases, or similar items yourself.

If you have fragile items you can't move, ask how they recommend dealing with the items. They'll likely be willing to work with you and find a solution, as long as you bring this to their attention ahead of time.

Evening Before: Vacuum the Carpets

Plan on vacuuming all your carpets on the evening before your service.

Some carpet cleaning companies include vacuuming in their services, but not all do. If the company you've hired doesn't, you'll want to remove the surface dirt so the cleaners can focus on deep-down grime. If vacuuming is included, vacuuming twice before cleaning won't hurt your carpets and will ensure all surface debris is removed from the carpets.

Vacuuming should be reserved for the evening before so that no one tracks in dirt after the carpets are vacuumed. After everyone is home, children are done playing outside, and the garbage has been taken out is the best time to vacuum.

Morning Of: Leave a Parking Space

On the morning of your carpet cleaning service, make sure the cleaners have a place to park. If people in the family are driving off to work and school, you might not need to do anything. If the driveway is full of cars, move one or two so that a free parking spot is close to the door.

If you only have access to street parking, you obviously can't secure a driveway spot for the cleaners.

In these situations, the best strategy is to move your car in the morning -- when people are driving to work and leaving their parking spaces open. Park your car in the closest available space, and then move it when the cleaners come. They can take your parking space.

Immediately Before: Secure All Pets

Immediately before the scheduled time of your carpet cleaning, secure any pets you have. Put them in crates, tied up out back or in rooms that won't be cleaned. This step is for the cleaners' own protection and for the pets' safety -- the cleaners will leave the front door open during the cleaning to bring hoses inside.
